The Comedy You've Been Waiting For!

Just as the swallows return each year to Capistrano, thousands upon thousands of Midwestern hunters make their homage to the family deer camp.  Following in the family tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation, these fine men leave home in their never ending quest for that most elusive creature, the trophy buck.

For a few weeks each Fall, these brave men will sit at their secret spot in the woods, armed with nothing but a rifle, a case of beer
(Leinenkugal), a bottle of whiskey (whatever's on sale), and a small supply of pasties (from the local Pasty Hut along the highway) to tide them over as they wait for a buck to pass by.  At night, they'll return to the deer camp and tell a tale of the trophy buck that was too far away to shoot, with antlers so big that they shamed an oak tree.  They'll play cards, pass gas and look forward to going back into the woods the next morning.

Some of these men will have moderate success when they bag a buck.  They'll proudly strap it to the hood of their car and parade it through town as they head home to fill their freezer.  They'll take the head to the taxidermist to be mounted and eventually it will adorn the wall of the garage. Some will shoot the consolation prize of deer hunting, a doe.  The rest will go home with nothing but a desperate need for a long hot bath.

Escanaba in da Moonlight is Jeff Daniels' hilariously twisted comedy about this Midwest tradition.  Set in the "World famous Soady deer camp" on the eve of Opening Day of the 1989 deer season, it is the story of Reuben Soady.  Unlike his father, Albert, his brother, Remnar, or family friend, Jimmer Negamanee, Reuben has never bagged a buck.  He hopes that this will be the year that all changes, but things are not looking good for him.  Strange  things are happening at the Soady Deer Camp.  Strange, eerie things that have them all wondering if they should abandon the deer camp and go home.

In the Autumn of 2002,
Escanaba in da Moonlight was presented at the Old Town Playhouse.  It became their most successful non-musical production to date.  As luck would have it, four cast members from that production came to auditions and were cast.  Reprising their roles are Conrad Mason as Albert Soady, Steve Stenman as Reuben Soady, Bart Ingraham as Remnar Soady, and Wizard® as da Jimmer.  Joining them is the Director of the 2002 production, George Beeby as Ranger Tom, and Karen Haspas as Wolf Moon Dance. (For more on this, see the Inside Story)

Directed by
Gary Bolton, Escanaba in da Moonlight opens on Friday, November 7th and runs November  7-9, 13-16 and 20-22 at GTACS Kohler Auditorium.  We encourage you to get your tickets early, Escanaba in da Moonlight already has a history in this area of being the most successful comedy ever.  Sadly, the last time many people were turned away.  Don't let this opportunity pass you by.  After all, how often do you and your family get a chance to put on your finest flannel shirt, orange hunting vest and hat and enjoy a night at the theatre after a meal of pasties, jerky and flapjacks.

In the meantime, you may want to brush up on speaking with a "Yooper" dialect.
